Anna, the Romantic Poltergeist
The 17Hundred90 is Savannah’s oldest operating inn and its fourteen romantic rooms are a favorite with honeymooners. However, the inn’s history holds a tragedy and the building itself is home to one of Savannah’s most famous and active ghosts. The orginal townhouse at the inn’s location, 225 East President Street, was originally built for Steele White, a wealthy merchant, in the 1790s. White, in his 60s, imported a child bride from Ireland and kept her in a room, now room 204 in the inn, until time for the wedding.
Anna, the reluctant girl threw herself from the roof of the inn rather than go through with the marriage. She broke her neck and died in room 204 12 hours later. She was dead but not gone. Visitors to the inn frequently encounter her. Sometimes they see Anna, other times they hear her. She’s a poltergeist, a noisy ghost.
Often seen weeping on the stoop or on the stairs, Anna has a special affinity for room 204 where she was kept and finally died. But she’s picky. Single people are not bothered by the sad spirit but couples who stay in room 204 may be treated to a real show. Dresser drawers open and close, the phone rings, the bed has even lifted from the floor and lady’s lingerie disappears.
But it goes further than that. Staff say that strange things only happen to couples who are in love and then the strange phenomena usually occur when the woman is out of the room. Anna seems to be making a point. One man, on his honeymoon, was surprised to see a girl looking nothing like his new bride sitting on the side of the bed in a long white nightgown. He was so disturbed he rolled off the bed and would not get off the floor until the couple were moved to an adjoining room.
The inn management always tells visitors checking into the room that it is haunted.
